It immediately led fans to believe that her song lyrics reflect the emotional consequences of her marriage to stranger things Actor David Harbour. Her 14 new tracks on the album are described as “semi-autobiographical”, where Lily has addressed her ex-husband’s alleged infidelity, leaving fans to speculate about the mystery woman she repeatedly addresses as “Madeline.”
Did David Harbor cheat on Lily Allen in their ‘open marriage’?
After the release of Lily Allen’s new album, fans immediately compared it to Beyoncé’s. Lemonadeand ‘Madeline’ seemed like Lily’s version of Becky with good hair. Especially in your song, TennisLily uses sports as a metaphor to highlight her husband’s infidelity. She mentioned finding some text messages on his phone, with a disturbing chorus that said, “You won’t play with me, and who the fuck is Madeline?”* In the next song, the narration continues where Lily added some perspective from the other woman and claimed that their relationship was purely physical and insisted that she believed Lily had consented to their “arrangement.”
On both tracks, Madeline and Dallas Major, Lily describes a painful betrayal within what she describes as an “open” marriage with boundaries. He highlighted that his partner supposedly broke boundaries. Additionally, she wrote, “It had to be with strangers, but you’re not a stranger, Madeline.” These words have led fans to believe that she was referring to her husband’s three-year affair with a younger costume designer, one of several alleged affairs that surfaced before their separation in December 2024.
Is Lily Allen’s new album about her life?
In an interview with British Vogue, published on October 17, 2025, Allen confirmed that his personal experiences inspired parts of the album. However, he did not name David Harbor directly. The singer explained that she wrote the album to process the events that occurred in her life. Talking to Perfect Magazine about the same, he said:
“There are things that are on record that I experienced within my marriage, but that doesn’t mean it’s all gospel. It’s inspired by what happened in the relationship. Two people who were once together are not together. And that’s really sad. It’s hard. It’s hard for me to not have my own person, you know?”
