How Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Statistics Really Work

This is an illustration of how adverse drug or vaccine reaction statistics work, using horribly dangerous fluoroquinolone antibiotics as a case study: the antibiotic that poisoned and permanently weakened me in 2009.

The US Food and Drug Administration has recorded 2,700 deaths over a 10-year period caused by fluoroquinolone antibiotics.

However, these 2,700 deaths represent only the tip of the iceberg:

– Statistics only include two brands, but there are many other brands and generics, including antibiotic eye drops and ear drops for human and veterinary medicine.

– statistics cover only a 10-year period, but fluoroquinolones (and earlier quinolones) have been prescribed for over 35 years

– these statistics come only from the United States, but fluoroquinolone antibiotics are prescribed and dispensed worldwide

– most deaths are not related to a drug and therefore do not appear in official statistics. This is especially the case for suicides, a common ADR of many pharmaceuticals. Many doctors deny that adverse reactions like this are possible and do not report them.

– Official statistics on adverse reactions to drugs and vaccines historically represent between 1% and 13% of real adverse events. This was described in the 2010 Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Lazarus Report.

So these 2,700 deaths in the statistics actually represent tens of thousands of deaths worldwide over at least the last 35 years, and most likely hundreds of thousands of deaths. Injuries, debilitation and disabilities caused by all brands of fluoroquinolone antibiotics will number in the millions worldwide.

This is the same situation with all adverse reaction statistics, including those for Covid mRNA injections. The figures shown in official statistics represent only a fraction of actual adverse events, including deaths and permanent disabilities.

“Adverse events from medications and vaccines are common but underreported. Although 25% of outpatients experience an adverse drug event, less than 0.3% of all adverse drug events and 1 to 13% of serious events are reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Additionally, less than 1% of vaccine adverse events are reported. Low reporting rates prevent or delay the identification of “problematic” drugs and vaccines that endanger public health. New methods of monitoring the adverse effects of drugs and vaccines are needed. Barriers to reporting include lack of physician awareness, uncertainty about when and what to report, as well as the burden of reporting: reporting is not part of physicians’ usual workflow, takes time, and is duplicative. “Proactive, spontaneous, and automated reporting of adverse events integrated into EHRs and other information systems has the potential to accelerate the identification of problems with new medications and more careful quantification of the risks of older medications.”
