A networked, temperature-controlled hangar for the Australian Defense Force’s MQ-4C Triton aircraft is reportedly nearing completion and is expected to be completed four months ahead of schedule.
Appropriate facilities and infrastructure to support the introduction into service of the MQ-4C Triton aircraft system are being delivered under the Department of Defense Project AIR7000 Phase 1B.
The scope of works at RAAF Base Tindal for AIR7000 Phase 1B includes two maintenance hangars, a support and maintenance building, a deployable mission control system to support operations, aircraft pavements, an aircraft engine washing and starting area, a shelter for ground support equipment, internal access roads, car parking, general pavements and landscaping, as well as a service facility. Local construction and engineering services throughout the site.
“The Royal Australian Air Force Tritons at RAAF Base Tindal will soon be housed in state-of-the-art facilities,” according to Special Envoy for Defence, Veterans Affairs and Northern Australia, Luke Gosling.
“Delivered under AIR7000 Phase 1B and valued at more than $300 million, the facility will support up to six MQ-4C Tritons. “I am very proud that the hangar has been delivered by the Territory’s Sitzler Pty Ltd, which is on track to complete it four months ahead of schedule.
“RAAF Base Tindal itself is also increasing its readiness with the construction of survival bunkers at the base… built by the US to a specification that has already been extensively tested and will keep our ADF personnel safe from a range of potential threats once deployed.
“There will be more, too, because our Northern bases need to be reinforced as the capabilities of regional powers strengthen and geostrategic intent can change rapidly. “We are preparing to be better prepared to defend Australia from a distance and that means platforms and fires, but it also includes greater resilience and survivability of assets and personnel on our own territory.
“The Federal Government continues to make infrastructure investments that contribute to Defence’s capability and resilience, particularly in northern Australia.”
