Oakley Meta Vanguard review: The smart glasses that do it all

There are so many times when you’re just running and you pass something beautiful. It’s very easy to just say, “Hey Meta, start recording a video” and get a quick clip as you flick through. You can also customize the Action button to choose different filming modes, such as slow motion or hyperlapse.

The Garmin integration is also designed to meet your social media needs. Yes, it syncs with Meta AI, allowing the glasses to tell you if you’re hitting your target pace or HR zones, something I don’t think you really need if you’re already wearing a beeping and buzzing Garmin on your wrist. What you really want to do with the watch is activate automatic camera capture at key moments in your workout, so you can put together highlight reels and then overlay your Garmin stats on top.

The fact that this is a social media fitness device is also reflected in the fact that the filming is limited to 30 second, 1 minute, 3 minute and 5 minute clips. Meta informs me that most people tend to stick to 30-second video clips, much better for TikToks and Reels. You can also set clips to be imported automatically, so they’re only in your Photos library when you plan to review and post them to Instagram.

I’m private on Strava; I really don’t need anyone to witness my leisurely 10 mile trail runs. But every running influencer filming “Mile 1!” to the end of “Mile 26.2!” from their last marathon they will love them.

Aside from the fitness thing, I think the Meta AI assistant is pretty fun. I have some friends who can identify plants and animals while we walk. Meta AI can do that at a basic level, even if it’s not about identifying specific varieties. I think it’s a superpower to be able to identify if you’re not sure if those flowers are zinnias or dahlias when you pass by. Nota bene: I wouldn’t ask Meta AI or any other chatbot super personal questions. I’d also go into Settings, Data & Privacy, and Delete All Public Vibes (ew!) because I find everything about Meta AI as a social media platform to be (double ew!) gross, but that’s just me.
