Getafe professional Allan Nyom’s workday had barely begun on Sunday night during the floodlit match outside Madrid when it was already over.
Totally bewildered, the defender looked at referee José Luis Munuera Montero as he showed him the red card. Nyom had only been on the field for 37 seconds when, very far from the ball (20 meters away), he knocked down Vinícius Júnior with a clothesline tackle.
What was presumably intended to be a tactical foul turned out to be much more brutal in practice. The Brazilian also knew how to take advantage of this gift. The referee had no choice. Nyom’s action against the Real Madrid star took place right in front of both benches and, most importantly, in view of the fourth official.
In fact, after being shown the red card, Nyom spent more time on the pitch than after being substituted. That was also due to their disbelief. The 37-year-old man had no knowledge of any crime. But after the first video replays of the incident, there was no doubt.
Things moved just as quickly after the restart, as Kylian Mbappé immediately took advantage of the new numerical superiority and scored the winning goal for the Royals just 20 seconds after play resumed. And Getafe? In one minute, they destroyed everything they had worked so hard for for more than 76 minutes: getting a point against the record champions of Spain.
