Brandy says ‘dehydration’ forced her to abruptly leave Monica’s concert

“Everyone involved agreed that prioritizing my well-being was of utmost importance,” the singer says after leaving the show mid-song.

Brandy said in a statement that dehydration was to blame for the singer’s abrupt and early departure from her Saturday night concert with Monica in Chicago.

The Boy Is Mine tour, co-headlined by Brandy and Monica, kicked off earlier this week in Cincinnati. However, at the third show of the tour on Saturday in Chicago, video emerged of Brandy suddenly leaving the stage mid-song during “Baby”; She never returned to the concert, forcing Monica to handle the rest of the show herself and depriving the audience of the final duet of her 1998 hit “The Boy Is Mine.”

Amid speculation about why Brandy abruptly left the concert (Monica immediately dismissed any possible bad blood by yelling at Brandy as the show continued), the singer explained in a statement Sunday morning that she was forced to leave due to health concerns.

“I sincerely apologize for the abrupt end to last night’s performance in Chicago. After weeks of non-stop rehearsals, last night I experienced dehydration and feeling like I wanted to pass out, everyone involved agreed that prioritizing my well-being was of the utmost importance,” Brandy wrote.

“I still made the decision to try to come back and give it my all despite not feeling well. With having to make some adjustments and the show being very technical, unfortunately, it was impossible to fully connect sonically with the production, I really appreciate everyone’s best efforts.”

Brandy also thanked Monica for “stepping forward with such grace and professionalism” and added that after leaving the show she went to a nearby doctor who apparently gave her the green light to continue The Boy Is Mine tour, without delay.

“I look forward to returning to the stage, stronger and more grateful than ever, alongside my daughter Monica, tonight in Indianapolis,” Brandy wrote.
