Aamir Khan is all set to be honored with the first RK Laxman Award for Excellence, a new award introduced as a tribute to the legendary cartoonist. Widely regarded as one of Indian cinema’s most talented and influential superstars, Aamir has made some of the most memorable and impactful films of his long career. With a body of work spanning decades, he has forged a unique legacy, earning admiration not only for his acting but also for his commitment to meaningful and thought-provoking cinema. This makes him an apt choice to receive an award that celebrates excellence in creative endeavor.

The RK Laxman family has announced the inaugural award to pay tribute to the iconic artist, and Aamir Khan has been confirmed as its first winner. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place November 23, 2025 at the MCA Cricket Stadium in Pune. To add a special touch to the event, a live performance by Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman will accompany the presentation, combining music, memories and celebration to honor the life and work of RK Laxman, who created one of India’s most beloved characters, The Common Man.

Speaking on the occasion, Usha Laxman, daughter-in-law of the late cartoonist, shared that the family wanted the event to be a heartfelt tribute. He highlighted that the award and the accompanying Rahman concert were aimed at celebrating the lasting legacy of RK Laxman. Confirming that Aamir Khan would receive the inaugural honour, he added that this would be one of the highest tributes the family could offer to their beloved Laxman, recognizing not only his artistic brilliance but also his impact on Indian culture.

RK Laxman, best remembered for his iconic comic strip You Said It and the creation of The Common Man, captured the humour, irony and daily struggles of ordinary Indians in a way that resonated with millions of people. He also contributed sketches for the timeless television series Malgudi Days, written by his brother RK Narayan. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades including the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan and an honorary doctorate from the University of Mysore. Awarding Aamir Khan the first RK Laxman Award for Excellence symbolizes recognition of creative vision, innovation and the pursuit of meaningful storytelling, qualities that both the actor and the cartoonist exemplify.
