Birmingham City have given fans a first look at what their replacement for St. Andrew’s could look like, revealing concept images of a state-of-the-art stadium set to open in the 2029/30 season.
The Championship team, whose spiritual home it has remained since 1906, is planning a property that could cost up to £3bn.
The proposed design would increase the capacity from 29,409 to a staggering 62,000, making it the eighth largest stadium in England, slightly larger than Anfield (61,276) and just 850 seats less than the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Images released by the club show a futuristic “spaceship”-inspired exterior in the club’s signature blue, with the word “BLUES” prominently displayed around the wrap. Fans can also expect generous green spaces around the stadium and rooftop areas designed for pre-match relaxation.
Nick Smith, director of infrastructure for the city of Birmingham, offered a Update on potential designs.adding that the stadium will also be equipped to host large-scale non-football events.
He stressed, however, that the final design remains “subject to change.”
While the visuals are impressive, Birmingham focuses on the countryside first; They will need to return in a big way to fill the stands when this new futuristic house finally opens. Otherwise, all the rooftop bars and green spaces in the world won’t stop those seats from feeling a little empty.
